Founding engineer (UK/EU)
agentic AI settlement infrastructure
πŸ“ Headquarters: Cambridge, United Kingdom | Work from anywhere in the UK or EU
About UNYX
UNYX is building an agentic ai settlement network for non-bank financial institutions (nbfis). we replace fragmented correspondent banking with intelligent, compliant, real-time money movement across global payment rails and select on-chain ledgers
Until today, nbfis had only one option: depend entirely on banking partners and correspondent banks. for the first time, shifts in technology, regulation, and ai make it possible to build tailored rails that empower nbfis to become direct members and trade globally on infrastructure designed specifically for themβ€”not borrowed from banks
Why Join Us
As our first engineering hire, you'll:
  • shape the initial system architecture and ship the v1 platform end-to-end with design partners
  • work directly with experienced founders (serial entrepreneurs with multiple exits and ipos)
  • build in a regulated fintech environment where correctness, safety, and compliance are critical
  • help define a new global financial category by enabling nbfis to settle directly with each other
What you’ll work on
Core platform development
  • architect and build core services for settlement, reconciliation, and audit
  • launch developer-grade apis/sdks and slas: idempotent interfaces, clear error semantics, tracing/metrics, and well-documented onboarding
Agentic ai systems
  • lead development of ai agents for routing, settlement, compliance, treasury, and audit
  • productionize llm-driven, tool-using systems with strong guardrails and evaluation frameworks
Global payment rails integration
  • integrate with schemes across the world: faster payments/chaps, sepa/sepa instant, swift/iso 20022, fedwire/ach, rtp/fednow, card networks, open banking interfaces, local instant schemes, and compliant on-chain ledgers
  • bring deep understanding of scheme rules and operational realities
Engineering for safety and compliance
  • implement correctness: double-entry accounting, reconciliation pipelines, exactly-once effects where feasible, encryption, hsm-backed key management, immutable audit trails, and least-privilege access
  • translate regulation (psd2/psd3, mica, dora, amld, fatf, bsa/aml) into technical safeguards
  • support soc 2 readiness plans
Partner with customers
  • sit with nbfis, validate workflows, narrow scope to move fast, and iterate based on measured outcomes
Foundational practices
  • set coding standards, ci/cd, iac, on-call/incident processes, and slos
  • mentor early hires and help scale the team
What we’re looking for
Must-haves
  • proven ai/agent development in production: llms with tool-use/function-calling, orchestration, retrieval (rag), safety, and evaluation
  • hands-on backend expertise: shipped 0β†’1 products, owned architecture through monitoring
  • financial systems exposure: settlement, ledgers, reconciliation, or similarly high-integrity domains
  • fluent in global payment rails: real experience with multiple schemes (swift/iso 20022, ach/fedwire, rtp/fednow, sepa, faster payments, chaps, card networks, open banking), plus scheme rules and operational realities
  • fluent in blockchain/web3 rails: custody, key management, chain data, and compliant institutional use cases. we are compliance-first; this is not a speculative token project
  • security & compliance mindset: secure sdlc, role-based access, auditability
  • excellent collaboration and communication skills
Nice-to-haves
  • experience embedding aml/sanctions screening, kyb/kyc, or transaction monitoring
  • familiarity with agent frameworks (orchestration, vector stores, prompt/versioning, evaluation)
  • prior work with custodians, fx providers, market makers, or blockchain vendors
  • experience in regulated fintech (fca, eba, mas, finma, bafin) or audit programs (soc 2, pci)
Our values
  • pragmatic > shiny: use proven tools to move fast and de-risk pmf
  • security & compliance by design: auditability from day one
  • ownership with speed & quality: narrow scope to ship safely
  • build with users: design-partner driven, iterative development
Location & compensation
  • work from anywhere in the uk or eu (time-zone overlap required)
  • periodic offsites in cambridge or major eu hubs
  • competitive salary and generous equity (no token comp)
